Anvil Prior Work Penalty Reference Cap: 40 Levels ("Too Expensive!")

Every time you combine, rename, or repair an item on an anvil, its prior work penalty increases exponentially according to Cost = 2^N - 1:

The Mathematical Architecture of Minecraft Experience (XP)

In Minecraft, player levels do not follow a linear progression. Reaching Level 30 from Level 29 requires significantly more experience orbs than advancing from Level 1 to Level 2. Mojang intentionally designed the experience curve around a piecewise quadratic function to prevent players from hoarding excessive level counts without diminishing returns.

The Piecewise XP Formulas

The total experience points ($P$) required to reach a specific level ($L$) from zero is governed by three distinct tiers:

  • Levels 0 to 16: Points = L² + 6L (Levels require 2 additional XP points per level: 7, 9, 11, etc.)
  • Levels 17 to 31: Points = 2.5L² - 40.5L + 360 (Levels require 5 additional XP points per level)
  • Levels 32 and beyond: Points = 4.5L² - 162.5L + 2220 (Levels require 9 additional XP points per level)

Why Level 30 is the Golden Threshold

Tier 3 enchanting tables require a minimum of 15 bookshelves and player Level 30. When you perform a maximum-tier enchantment, the game deducts exactly 3 levels (reducing your level from 30 down to 27) and 3 lapis lazuli.

Because the XP curve scales quadratically, recharging from Level 27 back to Level 30 requires only 306 XP points (approximately 61 Zombie kills). In contrast, grinding from Level 0 to Level 30 requires 1,395 XP points (279 Zombie kills). Therefore, the most efficient survival strategy is to immediately spend levels upon hitting 30 rather than continuing to stack levels into the 40s and 50s.

How to Avoid the "Too Expensive!" Anvil Trap

In Survival mode, the anvil locks out any operation that demands 40 or more levels, flashing the infamous "Too Expensive!" error. To successfully construct god-tier armor or swords (e.g. Sharpness V, Unbreaking III, Mending, Looting III, Sweeping Edge III):

  1. Combine in a Binary Tree: Instead of applying books one by one onto the sword (which doubles the penalty on each step), combine book A with book B, and book C with book D. Then combine the two composite books together before applying them to the weapon.
  2. Apply Mending First: Mending absorbs ambient XP orbs to automatically restore item durability, eliminating the need for manual diamond/netherite anvil repairs and dodging the prior work penalty entirely.
What is the fastest mob farm for XP in Minecraft?
An Enderman farm built in the End dimension (using an Endermite bait and fall-damage drop chute) is by far the fastest survival XP generator, taking a player from Level 0 to 30 in roughly 45 to 60 seconds without complex redstone.
